It's available at Amazon.com.

Here follows what some are saying about Godbey and BEAUTY LESSONS:

“Terry Godbey's Beauty Lessons are dynamic narratives of loss and recovery that wrestle with motherhood, domesticity, the body's frailties, and the unleashed wilderness of desire sucked on ‘like peppermints.’ There is plenty of regret here, and yet, ultimately, this is a book about triumph and redemption: ‘Hurry and pick yourself up/ it is enough right now/ to eat and drink/ and save your own life.’”
-- Dorianne Laux

“Terry Godbey's poems are carefully deployed, personally revealing, and shamelessly boy-crazy. In the best of them, she leads the reader through the doors of adolescence and into the house of poetry.”
-- Billy Collins

“Terry Godbey’s Beauty Lessons is a poetic homage to the fearlessness of women and girls, beginning with learning to ride a bicycle in a dream and ending in triumph over fears and betrayals. … Most dazzling are her apostrophic meditations, and a metonymic range that dances among cereal and war games, test pilots, earthquakes and sonic booms. These poems open onto a journey through the whole of a life thus far, and throughout the reader feels buoyed on the fountain of air that held up the rider in the dream.”
-- Carolyn Forché

“Honest, gritty, blunt at times – always brave, her work is reminiscent of Sharon Olds and Kim Addonizio, but most of all, reminds me of the songwriting of Lucinda Williams.”
-- Nancy A. Jani writes: "But be assured the slow, quiet protest infused throughout [From the Age of Miracles] is also not a product of apathy, or neglected conscience, but rather the result of a life that has, at one point or another, passed through the hard fire of political activism and seeing through it, prefers to no longer fuel that fire. David Chorlton’s poetry is the record of a man who has reached the apex of the pyramid, and is looking fearfully upon the two sides as they relentlessly battle, threatening to bring the whole creation down. It is poetry that serves as a tough though not proselytizing “No” to our world’s deranged politics, while simultaneously reaching out as a resounding “Yes” to the forces of life that continue to infuse the natural world despite our endless attempts to smother them."

Click here to read the entire review: http://www.sevencirclepress.com/fromtheageofmiracles.htm

Click here to purchase a copy: http://www.slipstreampress.org/miracles.html

Recognizing the Local as the Universal

On April 8, 2010, the Poetry Collection, University at Buffalo, will host a celebration of poetry saluting three of Western New York's most active poets:

Bernhard Frank
Former editor/publisher of the Buffalo-based poetry journal Buckle" (1977-1982) and Buckle & (1998-2006), editor/translator of Modern Hebrew Poetry (University of Iowa Press, 1980). In the end, the printer did a fine job, resulting in two beautifully produced volumes, which we believe were worth the wait.

Please check our web site for further details on both releases.

2008 Poetry Chapbook Winner Announced

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_vaoyjpR2muQ/SH3YbfRLtGI/AAAAAAAAAAM/pCgemZpjQnU/s200/rescue_conditions.jpg" border="0" alt="Rescue Conditions, by Carrie Shipers"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223569109581280354" />

The editors of Slipstream Press would like to congratulate Carrie Shipers of Lincoln, NE for winning our annual Slipstream Poetry Chapbook Competition. She will receive the $1,000.00 award as well as 50 copies of her published chapbook, Rescue Conditions.

We found Rescue Conditions to be a remarkable and impassioned collection. As poet, editor, and professor, Hilda Raz has commented: “To read Rescue Conditions is to experience the pure joy of recovering family identities--as heroes, outlaws, lovers, and tender citizens--through
art.”

Kathy Fagan writes: “Rescue Conditions is the story of a working family living in a small American town. The Gainses are their neighbors to the left; the Losses are their neighbors to the right. They try hard, love hard, live harder. With these substantial and substantially crafted poems, Carrie Shipers says forget the band-aids, what we need are CPR and a stiff drink. Her book reaches us just in time.”

* * *

For those of you who have participated in the competition, we thank you for your involvement and support. It is always a difficult decision to select a single manuscript from among many excellent entries.

All entrants will receive a copy of the chapbook as well as the latest issue of Slipstream Magazine, both of which are currently being printed.

Our Poetry Chapbook Competition has an annual deadline of December 1 and is open to all poets writing in English. This year, for the first time, we are accepting contest submissions electronically as well as by regular mail. Chapbook contestants can upload their manuscript via the Slipstream website and remit the $20.00 reading fee using PayPal (which accepts credit card payments).

Please review the contest guidelines at: www.slipstreampress.org/contest.html, where you will also find directions on the submittal process.

We remain an independent, not-for-profit small press unaffiliated with any university or school.

Welcome

Welcome to the new Slipstream blog.
