New theme announced for Issue #32

Submissions for our Sex-Food-Death (Issue #31) theme issue are now closed. We are now reading for another theme issue (#32) for which we will explore "Cars, Bars & Stars." A poem could include any combination of the subjects or only one. Creative interpretations are encouraged. Deadline is set for April 30, 2012. Godbey Publishes New Book

Deadline for our Poetry Chapbook Contest Nears.

Submissions for our Annual Poetry Chapbook Competition will be accepted until the December 1, 2010 deadline. Remember that you have the choice of submitting either by U.S. Mail or electronically through our web site.

We offer a $1,000.00 prize plus 50 copies of the published chapbook. You may send up to 40 pages of poetry along with a $20.00 reading fee. All entrants will receive a copy of the winning book plus a one-issue subscription to Slipstream.

Release Party for Issue #30

On Saturday, September 25th at 7PM in The Loft at The Book Corner (1801 Main Street, Niagara Falls, NY), Slipstream will celebrate its 30th anniversary with the release of its 30th issue. The event will feature a marathon poetry reading featuring E.R. Baxter III, Michael Basinski, John Marvin, Gary Earl Ross, Ed Taylor, Jane Adam, Karen Lewis, Alex Mead, Amy Upton, Ken Feltges, Sophia Roberts, Michelle Kratts, Mike Fanelli, Livio Farallo, Bob Borgatti, and Dan Sicoli.

New Uploader Up and Running

You may not have noticed, but we now have a new uploader to submit manuscripts to our annual poetry chapbook contest. We can accept documents in a variety of formats including Word (.doc and .docx), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) and both rich text (.rtf) and plain text (.txt) formats. The uploader works on all browser platforms for both Windows and Mac.

Recognizing the Local as the Universal

On April 8, 2010, the Poetry Collection, University at Buffalo, will host a celebration of poetry saluting three of Western New York's most active poets:

Bernhard Frank
Former editor/publisher of the Buffalo-based poetry journal Buckle" (1977-1982) and Buckle & (1998-2006), editor/translator of Modern Hebrew Poetry (University of Iowa Press, 1980). He taught creative writing at Buffalo State College from 1965 until his retirement in 2000. A prolific poet, he has written and published a large number of poems, as well as short stories and two novels.

Dan Sicoli
A citizen of the Western New York poetry world since the early 1980s, Dan is widely published in literary magazines and is co-founder and co-editor of Slipstream magazine and press. He has published two books of poetry with Pudding House Publications, Pagan Supper (2002) and the allegories (2004).

ryki zuckerman
A long-time member of Earth's Daughters, ryki is the author of the chapbook body of the work (Textile Bridge Press, 1984). She created The Gray Hair Series for Earth's Daughters, which she curated for two and a half seasons and now co-curates with Jennifer Campbell. She also curates the Wordflight Series at the Crane Branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. A poetry advocate extraordinaire, zuckerman has been an active member of Buffalo's literary community since the 1970s.

Giannetti to read at UB Poetry Collection

Slipstream Press and the University at Buffalo Poetry Collection are pleased to announce that Robert M. Giannetti, Lewiston author and rare book dealer, will give a reading of his work at the Capen Library, room 420, on Monday Feb.15 at 7:00 p.m.

Recently translated into Polish and honored at an International Poetry Festival in Poznan, Poland, Giannetti frequently features themes related to books in his poetry. This aspect of his work will be complemented by a book arts exhibit of fine and rare volumes from the Special Collections of the Capen Library. The program is free and open to the public. Ample parking is available on the U.B. North Campus.

The 3rd Annual Buffalo Small Press Book Fair will be held on March 21, 2009 at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, 453 Porter Avenue, Buffalo, NY.

New Issue and Chapbook Have Arrived!

This past weekend issue #28 of Slipstream along with our new chapbook, Rescue Conditions by Carrie Shipers, arrived from the printer. All contributor copies, subscriptions, orders, and chapbook contest entrant copies are currently being mailed out.

It took us a bit longer to get these out this year due to the fact that we worked with a new printer and there were a few unexpected details we needed to address. In the end, the printer did a fine job, resulting in two beautifully produced volumes, which we believe were worth the wait.

2008 Poetry Chapbook Winner Announced

The editors of Slipstream Press would like to congratulate Carrie Shipers of Lincoln, NE for winning our annual Slipstream Poetry Chapbook Competition. She will receive the $1,000.00 award as well as 50 copies of her published chapbook, Rescue Conditions.

We found Rescue Conditions to be a remarkable and impassioned collection. As poet, editor, and professor, Hilda Raz has commented: “To read Rescue Conditions is to experience the pure joy of recovering family identities--as heroes, outlaws, lovers, and tender citizens--through
art.”

Kathy Fagan writes: “Rescue Conditions is the story of a working family living in a small American town. The Gainses are their neighbors to the left; the Losses are their neighbors to the right. They try hard, love hard, live harder. With these substantial and substantially crafted poems, Carrie Shipers says forget the band-aids, what we need are CPR and a stiff drink. Her book reaches us just in time.”

For those of you who have participated in the competition, we thank you for your involvement and support. It is always a difficult decision to select a single manuscript from among many excellent entries.

All entrants will receive a copy of the chapbook as well as the latest issue of Slipstream Magazine, both of which are currently being printed.

Our Poetry Chapbook Competition has an annual deadline of December 1 and is open to all poets writing in English. This year, for the first time, we are accepting contest submissions electronically as well as by regular mail. Chapbook contestants can upload their manuscript via the Slipstream website and remit the $20.00 reading fee using PayPal (which accepts credit card payments).
